About How to Survive

How to Survive drops you onto a wrecked island where you must locate food, water, shelter, and scattered pages of a Survival Guide. The game mixes action, adventure, and RPG elements while you craft weapons and fend off hostile creatures.

You can pick one of three characters, each with its own skill tree, and explore four distinct islands alone or with a friend in split‑screen co‑op, online challenges, or the story mode. An “Iron Man” difficulty adds a hardcore survival layer.

01 / THE GUIDE

Playable Characters and Skill Trees

Three characters are offered, each with different characteristics and a dedicated skill tree. These traits affect how you gather resources, craft items, and fight monsters across the islands.

Choosing a character determines which abilities you can unlock, influencing your approach to survival tasks and combat encounters.

  • Try each character early to see which skill tree matches your preferred tasks.
  • Balance skill points between crafting and combat for smoother progression.

02 / THE GUIDE

Island Exploration

The game features four islands, each populated with unique flora, fauna, and a variety of abhorrent monstrosities. Exploring provides the raw materials needed for crafting and survival.

Nightfall adds extra danger, so you must locate shelter or devise ways to survive after dark.

  • Scout during daylight to map resource locations.
  • Use natural landmarks to find your way back before night.

03 / THE GUIDE

Crafting Weapons and Tools

A deep crafting system lets you assemble over 100 handmade weapons and tools, from shotguns to Molotov cocktails. Materials are gathered from the environment and defeated enemies.

Crafted items are essential for defending yourself and any allies against island threats.

  • Collect a broad mix of resources before focusing on a single weapon.
  • Upgrade tools gradually to keep pace with tougher foes.

04 / THE GUIDE

Co‑op and Online Play

You can play offline split‑screen co‑op through the story mode or join a friend online for eight demanding challenges. Both modes let you share resources and combat duties.

Multiplayer integrates with Steam features such as Remote Play Together, Shared/Split Screen, and Remote Play on TV.

  • Assign one player to gathering and the other to combat for efficiency.
  • Use Remote Play Together if you lack a second controller.

05 / THE GUIDE

Iron Man Difficulty

The “Iron Man” difficulty option provides a demanding hardcore experience, raising the stakes for resource management, crafting, and combat.

Choosing this mode tests how well you can survive with limited supplies and tougher enemy encounters.

  • Practice on lower difficulties before attempting Iron Man.
  • Stockpile essential items early to offset the increased challenge.
