About House of the Dying Sun
House of the Dying Sun is a tactical space shooter that places you in the cockpit of the Empire’s deadliest interceptor while commanding the Harbinger Fleet. The game blends classic space‑sim combat with fleet‑level tactics, letting you issue orders, switch vessels, or pause time to plan.
Four difficulty levels accompany each of the 14 campaign scenarios, and completing bonus objectives unlocks powerful upgrades such as the Gap Drive. The title runs on Windows, supports 21:9 monitors, and offers both traditional monitor and VR headset play.

Control Schemes
The game officially supports rebinding controls, but only dual‑analog gamepads and keyboard & mouse are recognized in desktop mode. VR mode requires a dual‑analog gamepad; mouse and VR motion controls are not available there. HOTAS controllers are not officially supported and must be used at the player’s own risk.
These limitations mean that players should plan their hardware accordingly: a dual-analog gamepad works everywhere, while a keyboard & mouse setup is limited to non‑VR play.
- If you prefer precise aiming, use keyboard & mouse in desktop mode.
- For VR sessions, ensure a dual‑analog gamepad is connected before launching.

Gameplay Modes
Players can pilot the Executor Mk II from a cockpit view or issue commands to any fleet vessel from a tactical overview. Switching to another fighter or pausing time is possible, allowing careful consideration of each move. The game is single‑player only, with no multiplayer modes listed.
The tactical overview and pause features give a hybrid experience between first‑person dogfighting and strategic fleet management, catering to both action and planning styles.
- Use the pause function to evaluate complex enemy formations.
- Experiment with switching fighters to find a preferred cockpit feel.

Difficulty and Scenarios
Each of the 14 campaign scenarios offers four increasingly brutal difficulty settings. Players choose a difficulty before starting a scenario, affecting enemy toughness and overall challenge. The structure encourages replayability by letting you attempt the same scenario at higher levels.
Higher difficulties may require the special upgrades earned from bonus objectives, making the progression feel purposeful across the campaign.
- Start on a lower difficulty to learn ship controls before tackling harder levels.
- Plan to earn upgrades early, as they become essential on the toughest settings.

Fleet Upgrades
Completing bonus objectives grants special fleet upgrades such as the Gap Drive or the Kamikaze Chassis. These upgrades enhance ship performance and are necessary for the most difficult scenarios. Upgrades are earned during the campaign, tying progression to mission success.
The system encourages players to pursue optional goals, rewarding them with tools that can change how they approach later battles.
- Focus on bonus objectives that grant upgrades you haven’t yet obtained.
- Review which upgrades best complement your preferred combat style.

VR and Display Support
House of the Dying Sun runs on both traditional monitors and VR headsets like the HTC Vive. The game also supports ultra‑wide 21:9 displays, offering flexibility for various setups. In VR, only a dual‑analog gamepad is usable; mouse input is disabled.
These options let players choose an immersive VR cockpit or a conventional monitor experience, with the same core gameplay available across both.
- If you own a 21:9 monitor, enable it for a broader field of view.
- Check that your VR headset is recognized before launching to avoid input issues.
