About Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era carries the classic turn-based strategy series into a new chapter, blending empire building, tactical battles and RPG depth. Players explore a colorful world of beasts, spellcasters and champions, either through a narrative campaign that foreshadows doom or on procedurally generated and hand-crafted maps while managing towns, resources and armies.

Six factions offer distinct units, heroes and abilities, and the game supports solo play, AI skirmishes and three multiplayer modes. Construct buildings, upgrade creatures into stronger variants, and draw on spells from four schools of magic to shape your route to victory.

01 / THE GUIDE

Factions and Units

Olden Era offers six powerful factions, each with its own roster of creatures and heroes. Examples named in the official description include the armored knights of the Temple, the elemental spirits of the Grove, the dragons of the Dungeon and the undead of the Necropolis.

Faction rosters range from fragile but deadly vampires that drain life to sturdy griffins capable of counterattacking multiple times. Units and heroes wield active and passive abilities such as teleporting troops beyond their normal movement range, summoning reinforcements, or interfering with an opponent's spells and abilities.

  • Pair life-draining creatures with resilient front-line troops to balance risk and pressure.
  • Experiment with each faction's signature abilities to find synergies that suit your tactics.

02 / THE GUIDE

Procedural and Hand-Crafted Maps

Battles unfold on procedurally generated worlds or on hand-crafted maps built by the developers or community members through the in-game map editor. Terrain includes varied biomes, mountain passes, chokepoints and alternate pathways guarded by fearsome creatures and armies.

Limited movement points per turn turn every fork in the road into a decision: dash to a well to restore a hero's mana, chase a guarded treasure hoard, or hold back in case enemies wait beyond your line of sight.

  • Scout chokepoints early to claim positions that control enemy movement.
  • Weigh resource gathering against map control so neither front is left exposed.

Heroes and Their Effects

Heroes recruited from your towns lead armies and shape your empire as they gain experience. One may speed army travel across the world, another might raise unit initiative, favor recruiting a particular creature, or generate vital resources for your economy.

With more than a hundred unique heroes, each arriving with their own starting armies, skills and spells, there is ample room to match a leader to your preferred strategy and economic needs.

  • Choose heroes whose bonuses reinforce your faction's natural strengths.
  • Grow experienced heroes steadily so their skills and spells keep pace with your campaigns.

04 / THE GUIDE

Turn-Based Tactical Battles

Combat is turn-based and rewards finding synergies among units, their heroes, and the spells and artifacts they carry. Ranged units fire across the field, distances close quickly, and spells drawn from four schools of magic can strike from anywhere, encouraging smart but aggressive play.

Dealing and receiving damage earns Focus, a resource spent on distinctive unit abilities: the Graverobber summons Skeletons, the Hierophant heals weakened troops, the Arbitrator teleports an ally forward, and the Locust devours a nearby corpse for buffs. If the odds turn hopeless, you can pay the price to flee and fight another day.

  • Hold Focus for decisive moments, such as a clutch heal or a surprise teleport.
  • Screen ranged units behind durable melee troops so they can keep firing safely.

Multiplayer Options

Beyond the non-linear campaign and AI skirmishes, the game offers three different multiplayer modes, with the Steam listing noting online PvP, co-op and shared/split-screen play among its features. Remote Play Together is also listed, letting friends join sessions remotely.

Supporting features on the store page include Steam Achievements, Trading Cards, Steam Cloud, adjustable difficulty, custom volume controls, the ability to save anytime, and play at your own pace without timed input.

  • Coordinate roles with a co-op partner before the match so each player covers a distinct front.
  • Use adjustable difficulty settings to keep AI skirmishes challenging but fair.
