About Hellevator
Hellevator is a 2D platform adventure set in an infernal hotel. Players guide a guest through a series of themed rooms, each filled with puzzles, hostile creatures, and hidden newspapers that expand the story.
The game’s core loop uses death as a tool: when the player dies, they immediately possess the nearest body, gaining that character’s on‑death ability to help progress.

Core Mechanics
The central mechanic revolves around death‑based possession. After a death, the player instantly takes control of the closest body, which provides a unique on‑death ability that can be used to overcome the current obstacle.
Because possession follows immediately after death, each death becomes a deliberate choice, allowing the player to experiment with different abilities while staying within the same room.
- Observe the layout before dying to ensure the nearest body offers a useful ability.
- Try several characters early to learn the range of on‑death abilities available.

Art and Atmosphere
The game features a distinctive 2D art style that blends dark, infernal motifs with varied environments such as a mysterious garden and a haunted warehouse, creating a cohesive visual experience.
Each room’s visual theme provides cues that help identify puzzle types and potential hazards, making the artwork an integral part of gameplay comprehension.
- Notice background details; they often hint at hidden paths or interactive objects.
- Use the visual theme of a room to anticipate the kind of challenge you will face.

Room Structure
The infernal hotel consists of many separate rooms, each presenting a fresh set of platforming elements, enemies, and puzzles. Locations range from a mysterious garden to a haunted warehouse, ensuring variety.
Newspapers are scattered throughout these rooms; collecting them reveals narrative details about each area, encouraging exploration beyond simply reaching the exit.
- Search each room thoroughly for newspapers to gain story context.
- Treat each new room as an independent puzzle set and adapt your strategy accordingly.

Death‑Possession Abilities
Every character that can be possessed has a distinct on‑death ability. When the player dies and possesses that character, the ability becomes immediately available for solving the current challenge.
Because possession follows directly from death, players can experiment with different abilities in the same space, learning which ability best fits each obstacle.
- Plan your death so that the nearest body provides the most advantageous ability for the puzzle at hand.
- If an ability does not work as expected, try a different character to see how its on‑death power changes the outcome.

Boss Encounters
Certain rooms feature bosses that threaten the player’s progress. The description warns that bosses threaten your life and will haunt you for eternity if they are not defeated.
Boss fights often demand clever use of the possession system, requiring the player to select an appropriate on‑death ability to survive the encounter.
- Observe a boss’s pattern before using a death‑possession maneuver to ensure timing aligns with an opening.
- Check nearby newspapers for hints that may relate to a boss’s weakness or behavior.
