About Hacknet
Hacknet is a terminal‑based hacking simulator that places the player in the role of a lone user receiving automated emails from a dead hacker’s failsafe system. The story follows the mystery of Bit, whose death and the surrounding media reports drive you to explore a persistent virtual world.
The game emphasizes real UNIX commands, a soundtrack from underground artists, and full immersion without traditional level markers. It supports beginners while still rewarding seasoned users, and includes tools for players to craft and share their own campaigns via Steam Workshop.
01 / THE GUIDE
Story and Mystery
The narrative centers on Bit, a hacker who created an invasive security system and is reported dead. When Bit’s system fails to reconnect for 14 days, an automated failsafe sends emails to the player, pulling them into the investigation.
Players follow these emails, chase clues across systems, and uncover why the media’s account may be false, exploring themes of privacy, corporate greed, and hacker influence.
- Read each automated email carefully; they often hint at the next system to target.
- Compare information from different nodes to spot inconsistencies in the media narrative.

Real UNIX Commands
Hacknet uses actual UNIX commands rather than cinematic hacking tropes, providing an authentic experience. Players type commands to breach firewalls, navigate directories, and manipulate files, mirroring real‑world hacking techniques.
The game balances authenticity with accessibility, allowing newcomers to learn command syntax while offering depth for experienced users.
- Practice basic navigation commands early to build confidence.
- Use the in‑game help to recall command syntax when unsure.

Full Immersion
There are no explicit levels or obvious game elements, creating a seamless virtual environment. Players follow email guidance or independently explore, maintaining the illusion of a living network.
This design choice reinforces the feeling of being a genuine hacker, as the world persists with no levels or obvious game elements to break the illusion.
- Treat each new system as a fresh puzzle rather than a level.
- Document discovered passwords and IPs to avoid redundant searching.

Accessibility Features
Hacknet includes adjustable text size, captions, and a design that does not hand‑hold, making it approachable for players without terminal experience. The learning curve is balanced to welcome beginners while still challenging veterans.
These options help ensure the command‑line interface remains readable and comprehensible for a broad audience.
- Increase text size if the terminal becomes hard to read during long sessions.
- Enable captions to follow any spoken instructions or story elements.

Modding and Steam Workshop
Players can create custom campaigns, networks, nodes, themes, music, and story missions using Hacknet Extensions. These creations are shareable through the Steam Workshop, extending replayability beyond the base mystery.
The built‑in level editor empowers the community to craft diverse hacking experiences, from new narratives to alternative network layouts.
- Start with simple node modifications before attempting full campaign design.
- Browse the Workshop for inspiration and to see how others structure their missions.
