About Gunvein

Gunvein is a bullet‑hell shoot‑'em‑up that draws on classic arcade titles. Players pilot one of three ships, using lock‑ons, charged blasts and a screen‑clearing bomb while gathering points that become extra lives and shop currency.

The game offers several play styles: Arcade Mode for single‑credit runs with online leaderboards, Standard Mode with checkpoints and a shop, a Roguelike Arrange Mode with procedurally generated stages, and a set of Missions that teach basics and present extra challenges. Full controller support and Steam features round out the experience.

01 / THE GUIDE

Arcade Mode

Arcade Mode challenges you to travel as far as possible on a single credit. Progress is measured by score, and the highest runs are recorded on the game's online leaderboards.

Aggressive play generates resources that can temporarily boost your shot or trigger a bomb, creating feedback loops that help both survival and scoring.

  • Use lock‑ons and aggressive play to earn resources for shot boosts or bombs.
  • Observe top leaderboard runs for common high‑scoring patterns.

02 / THE GUIDE

Standard Mode

Standard Mode provides balanced checkpoints and a shop system, ensuring that each restart offers a chance to spend earned currency rather than losing progress.

The mode is designed for players who prefer a steady challenge without the pressure of 1‑credit clears, allowing learning through repeated play.

  • Use checkpoints to experiment with different ship upgrades.
  • Spend shop currency between restarts so no run is wasted.

03 / THE GUIDE

Roguelike Arrange Mode

Arrange Mode presents procedurally generated versions of the five core stages while preserving the intensity and pacing of handcrafted levels.

Two sub‑styles exist: Classic, where a weak ship levels up through kills, and Minimal, which mirrors arcade difficulty using a single ship.

  • Try different ability mixes in Classic runs to discover effective combos.
  • Use Minimal mode to practice patterns that appear in Arcade Mode.

04 / THE GUIDE

Characters

Three ships are available. Type A (Bagon) piloted by Riko offers high speed, a cone lock‑on and a powerful black‑hole bomb.

Type B (Damul) controlled by Miko provides full‑screen lock‑on coverage and a large laser beam, while Type C (Gunex) uses charged bombs and upgraded homing lasers for planned attacks.

  • Select Bagon for rapid movement and frequent lock‑ons.
  • Choose Gunex when you prefer setting up bomb blasts ahead of enemy waves.

05 / THE GUIDE

Missions

Missions offer extra challenges and tutorials, ranging from basic genre introductions to boss rushes and score‑attack trials.

These optional tasks reinforce core mechanics such as lock‑on usage, bomb timing and resource management without requiring a separate practice mode.

  • Begin with tutorial missions to master lock‑on controls.
  • Attempt boss rushes to evaluate bomb efficiency under pressure.
