About GRAIN ROT
In *GRAIN ROT* you inhabit a fragile wooden vessel as a Living Spark, navigating a cursed elevator that drops you into ever‑shifting underground ruins. When a vessel shatters, the Spark escapes, turning death into a chance to find a new host and continue the descent.
Co‑op play drives the chaos: smash furniture for gold, feed it to the Grinder, or betray teammates by launching their Sparks. Loot rebuilds a persistent Outpost, unlocking upgrades, survivors, and new ways to survive deeper layers where bodies warp and emotes mutate.
01 / THE GUIDE
Vessel Mechanics
Players possess and swap between wooden vessels that can splinter, collapse, or catch fire. When a vessel breaks, the Spark exits and must locate a new host to stay in the run.
The Spark’s survival hinges on finding another vessel before fading out, allowing continued participation in the current descent.
- Watch vessel integrity closely; early breaks give more time to locate a new host.
- Use the Grinder to convert broken furniture into gold before vessels are lost.

Co‑op Chaos
The game is a co‑op extraction horror where players can smash furniture for resources or feed it into the Grinder for gold. Friends can also be sabotaged by drop‑kicking enemies or launching allies’ Sparks out of their vessels.
If every vessel breaks, the group’s loot is lost, making teamwork and betrayal both viable strategies.
- Coordinate furniture smashing to maximize gold before the Grinder is needed.
- Consider timing betrayals when the group is near a corrupted vessel for maximum impact.

Procedurally Shifting Dungeons
Each descent takes place in procedurally shifting underground ruins that change layout as you go deeper. The Deep Layers contain corrupted vessels that react unpredictably to sound, movement, and each other.
Deeper levels increase the Rot, warping bodies and distorting voices, which can affect emotes and player perception.
- Listen for audio cues from corrupted vessels to anticipate sudden changes.
- Move cautiously in monster‑infested corridors to avoid being blocked by allies.

Outpost Progression
All loot hauled back rebuilds a persistent Outpost. Upgrades include interactive furniture, stat improvements, rescued survivors, and new survival methods for future descents.
A stronger Outpost enables deeper runs, allowing players to extract more resources and face greater challenges.
- Prioritize rescuing survivors to unlock additional stat upgrades.
- Invest gold in interactive furniture that aids in later, tougher layers.

Body Corruption & Mutation
As the Rot deepens, bodies warp and voices distort, altering emotes. This system creates visual and audio mutations that can be either detrimental or beneficial.
Players can experience “questionable cosmetics” that reflect the corruption level, influencing how they appear and interact in the game world.
- Observe emote changes; they may signal upcoming environmental hazards.
- Use corrupted visual cues to anticipate when a vessel might break.
