About Foundation

Foundation is a medieval city‑building simulation that forgoes traditional grids, letting you assemble modular structures and watch an organic settlement emerge. Beyond construction, you manage villagers, assign jobs, create production chains, and trade, while choosing difficulty, aspirations, or Creative mode to suit any pace. The game also features three Estates of the Realm—Labor, Clergy, and Kingdom—allowing you to specialize or blend paths for cultural and economic depth.

01 / THE GUIDE

Gridless Building System

Foundation uses a gridless layout, letting you place modular building parts without traditional constraints. The free‑building tool lets you assemble structures from individual components and turn them into larger monuments.

Because maps are generated without limits, each new settlement can expand organically, offering almost no construction restrictions while still supporting detailed design.

  • Experiment with angles to create unique silhouettes.
  • Use the free‑building tool for quick monument prototypes.

02 / THE GUIDE

Painting Tool for Organic Growth

The Painting tool lets you guide villagers by coloring zones for specific purposes, such as residential areas, roads, patrol routes, and forest extraction sites.

These painted zones influence where structures appear and how resources are gathered, giving you a visual method to shape the city’s growth.

  • Define separate colors for homes and roads for clarity.
  • Adjust zones gradually to see villager responses.

03 / THE GUIDE

Village Management Essentials

You can assign jobs, build production chains, and levy taxes to sustain your settlement, while also trading with neighboring villages or supporting the King.

Multiple economic strategies are possible, allowing you to focus on resource creation, commerce, or military contributions depending on your chosen playstyle.

  • Start with basic resource extraction before expanding trade.
  • Balance taxes to keep villagers satisfied.

04 / THE GUIDE

Estates of the Realm Progress Paths

The game features three Estates of the Realm—Labor, Clergy, and Kingdom—each representing a distinct development path.

You may specialize in a single estate or blend them, shaping the city’s culture, economy, and influence according to your preferences.

  • Mix estates to diversify benefits.
  • Focus on one estate early for clear direction.

05 / THE GUIDE

Difficulty, Aspirations, and Creative Mode

Foundation offers adjustable difficulty levels and Aspiration selections, letting you tailor challenges or focus on relaxed building.

Creative mode removes constraints entirely, providing an open sandbox where you can build and admire your city without managing villagers.

  • Select an Aspiration that matches your desired challenge.
  • Use Creative mode for experimental layouts.
