About FlashBoss

FlashBoss turns language study into a turn‑based RPG. Each card presents a target word in an example sentence with audio, and words return just as they begin to fade. Clusters of cards end with a boss fight that forces you to face your hardest cards before the cluster can be cleared. The game ships with multiple language courses, a built‑in neural text‑to‑speech engine, and local record‑keeping plus Steam achievements. You set a daily study goal by choosing a Master, and the system adapts the pace while keeping your streak alive with the Grimoire feature.

01 / THE GUIDE

Spaced Repetition and Boss Fights

Each card shows a target word in an example sentence and plays audio. Words are grouped into thematic clusters that repeat as they start to fade, matching the spaced‑repetition principle.

When a cluster ends, a boss fight appears: a correct answer moves you forward one step, a mistake moves you back two steps, and the hardest cards are dealt last. You cannot finish a cluster without defeating its boss.

  • Focus on memorizing the target word rather than the whole sentence to let grammar return naturally.
  • If you make a mistake, review the card immediately before proceeding to reinforce the memory.

02 / THE GUIDE

Choosing a Master and Daily Study Goal

The game offers Masters cards that set how many new words you study each day. Each Master has a different daily word count and an approximate completion time.

You can change your Master at any time to speed up or slow down your progress. Some Masters are marked as bossy and will occasionally force guided study.

  • Select a Master whose daily word count matches the amount of time you can consistently dedicate to study.
  • Switch to a less demanding Master during busy weeks to keep your streak alive.

Pronounce Window and Text‑to‑Speech

FlashBoss includes its own neural text‑to‑speech engine. Press Ctrl+P on any screen to open the pronounce window, where you can paste any text and hear it spoken correctly.

The audio can be saved for later use, making the pronounce window a handy read‑aloud tool for any study material beyond the built‑in cards.

  • Use the pronounce window to practice difficult words you encounter outside the game, such as homework sentences.
  • Save the generated audio files and replay them during commute time for extra exposure.

04 / THE GUIDE

Included Courses and Language Packs

The base game ships with five courses: German Core, Esperanto Core, Toki Pona, English Advance, and English Adept. Each course contains a set number of words and, for some, cultural integration sections.

Additional packs are available for German, Spanish, French, Italian, Esperanto, Swahili, Latin, and several root‑word courses.

  • Start with a Core course in a language you want to learn before adding specialized root packs.
  • Switch the voice pack in Preferences to match the regional accent you wish to hear.

05 / THE GUIDE

Achievements, Records, and Streaks

Personal records are stored locally, while Steam achievements are integrated for broader recognition. The Grimoire lets you pull tomorrow’s cards forward, banking a “Drive” day to keep your streak alive when you miss a study session.

After completing your first cluster, a revision mode unlocks, and at the end of the first tier you can enter the Bossrun to fight all tier bosses in sequence.

  • Activate the Grimoire when you anticipate a busy day to avoid breaking your streak.
  • Review the revision mode regularly to reinforce earlier clusters before moving on.
