FATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO: Maiden of Black Water makes its Steam debut as part of the horror-adventure series' 20th anniversary celebrations. The story follows three protagonists—Yuri Kozukata, Miu Hinasaki and Ren Hojo—as they investigate Mt. Hikami, a mountain once revered as a sacred site of water worship and later associated with gruesome incidents and strange phenomena.
The narrative is divided into separate missions, each led by a different character who can use Shadow Reading to sense lingering memories of the disappeared. Once the main story is complete, a special chapter starring Ayane from the NINJA GAIDEN series becomes available, offering a stealth-focused style of play that does not depend on the Camera Obscura.

Story and Setting
Mt. Hikami was once honored as a spiritual place, home to a distinctive religion whose beliefs and customs centered on worshipping water as a deity. The mountain is also said to have been the site of many gruesome incidents and mysterious phenomena, forming the backdrop for the game's horror narrative.
Yuri Kozukata, Miu Hinasaki and Ren Hojo each explore the mountain's secret paths. Their investigations are guided by remnants of memories left behind by people who vanished there, gradually uncovering the tragedies hidden within the sacred mountain.

Camera Obscura Mechanics
The Camera Obscura is a special camera capable of driving back vengeful ghosts and sealing away their powers. It can also reveal things invisible to the human eye, which helps with finding lost items and understanding the mountain's secrets.
After a spirit is defeated, the Glance ability lets players see the final moments of that spirit's life. These visions provide narrative context and can supply clues needed to advance through a mission.
- Point the camera at suspicious objects; some things can only be seen through its lens.
- After defeating a spirit, use Glance to learn about its death, which may point toward the next objective.

Shadow Reading Ability
The protagonists possess Shadow Reading, a power that senses the remnants of memories of people who disappeared on the mountain. These memories lead players deeper along secret mountain paths.
The ability is central to navigation and storytelling alike, as the memories frequently point toward the source of a haunting or a crucial story element—though malicious spirits often await at the end of these trails, hoping to draw you into the world of the dead.
- Use Shadow Reading whenever you reach an unfamiliar area; it often highlights hidden memories.
- Follow the traces of memories closely; they commonly lead to important story beats or objectives.

Post-Game Ayane Chapter
Once every main-story section from "First Drop" to "Last Drop" has been completed, special missions unlock starring Ayane, a Kunoichi of the Hajinmon sect of the Mugen Tenshin clan from the NINJA GAIDEN series. Unlike Yuri and Miu, she cannot use the Camera Obscura.
Instead, Ayane makes full use of her ninja abilities, working under cover of night to hide from view and evade ghosts in order to accomplish her mission. This creates a fresh playstyle built on avoidance rather than direct confrontation.
- Use Ayane's hiding ability to stay out of ghost sight while moving through dangerous areas.
- Plan routes that minimize exposure to spirits, since Ayane cannot capture them.

New Features and Controls
This Steam release adds improved screen resolution, new outfits and accessories, an updated Ghost List, and a new Snap Mode in which characters and spirits can be positioned freely for creative photography. Controls have also been updated.
