About Eternal Afternoon
Eternal Afternoon is a poetic walking‑sim that follows Sasha, a ten‑year‑old boy, as he wanders his suburban block in the final twenty real‑time minutes before a massive black wave engulfs everything. The game’s retro‑styled visuals recreate a summer 2001 neighbourhood with meticulous detail, creating a quiet, meditative atmosphere.
There is no save system or upgrades; each run relies on the player’s knowledge of how the world connects. Although each attempt ends after twenty minutes, the design encourages repeated exploration, hidden moments, and speedrun challenges that can keep discovery going far longer.
01 / THE GUIDE
Twenty‑Minute Run
Every playthrough lasts exactly twenty real‑time minutes, after which the world is consumed by a giant black wave. The timer does not pause, so every action must fit within this fixed window.
Because the game lacks a save feature, each attempt must be completed within the same twenty minutes. Mastery therefore depends on remembering routes, shortcuts, and story locations discovered in earlier runs.
- Observe the timer early to plan a rough route before the wave arrives.
- Use each run to test a different path rather than trying to see everything at once.

Exploration‑Driven Narrative
Story is delivered through environmental details, side quests, and fragments of mystery scattered across the neighbourhood. Players uncover small moments by wandering and interacting with the world.
The game rewards curiosity: linking discovered fragments builds a fuller picture of the impending end, encouraging players to revisit locations in later runs to notice missed details.
- Take note of recurring symbols; they often link separate story pieces.
- Re‑visit locations in later runs to notice details missed the first time.

Retro Visuals & Audio
Eternal Afternoon uses nostalgic, retro graphics to recreate a 2001 suburban block, delivering an authentic atmosphere that matches the game’s quiet dread.
Audio options include stereo and surround sound, and custom volume controls let players balance ambient cues with subtle environmental sounds.
- Experiment with surround sound for a more enveloping experience.
- Adjust volume to balance ambient sounds with any subtle cues.

Full Controller Compatibility
The game supports DualShock and DualSense controllers on Windows, macOS, and Linux, providing complete controller functionality without requiring timed input.
This support means players can navigate the neighbourhood and interact with story elements using either controller type, while the underlying gameplay remains unchanged.
- Try both DualShock and DualSense to see which feels more comfortable.
- If using a controller, try a short practice run early to get comfortable with movement before the wave arrives.

Replayability & Speedrun Focus
Designed with speedrunning in mind, the game encourages multiple attempts to master the twenty‑minute window. No upgrades or save files mean each run relies solely on player knowledge of the world’s layout.
This design creates high replay value: players continually refine routes, discover new story fragments, and improve their timing across successive attempts.
- Record your route on the first run to identify bottlenecks.
- Focus on one hidden element per run to gradually build a complete picture.
