About eSail Sailing Simulator
eSail Sailing Simulator teaches core sailing tasks such as raising the mainsail, tacking, gybing, reefing, mooring and anchoring through 20 narrated tutorials created by experts. The lessons are designed to support certified training programmes, though the game is not officially approved by any sailing authority.
After completing the tutorials you can sail the open waters around the fictional Shearwater Islands, where weather changes, points of interest and several challenge modes let you practise race tactics, treasure hunts, steering courses and passage planning in a realistic physics environment.

Learning Modules
The simulator offers 20 interactive tutorials written and narrated by seasoned sailors such as Jon Dobbin and Hannah White. Topics range from basic sail raising to chart use, anchoring, mooring and advanced sail trim, providing a structured path for beginners and experienced crew alike.
While the tutorials align with recognised training frameworks like RYA, US Sailing and Sail Canada, the description notes that eSail is not affiliated with or approved by any of those organisations, emphasizing its role as a supplemental learning aid.
- Compare each tutorial step with a printed sailing handbook to reinforce terminology.
- Pause after each lesson and note any differences between the virtual procedure and real‑world practice.

Live Sailing Mode
Live Sailing lets you explore the seas surrounding the Shearwater Islands while weather shifts from gentle breezes to severe storms. Before departing you can listen to VHF forecasts and adjust or reef sails to match the predicted conditions.
Your boat’s position and configuration are saved, enabling you to return to the same spot later. Collecting all Points of Interest awards the Master Explorer status, encouraging thorough exploration of the virtual archipelago.
- Check the VHF forecast early to decide whether to reef before a storm approaches.
- Mark visited POIs on a personal map to track progress toward Master Explorer.

Challenge Modes
eSail includes several challenge types: races against other users or AI‑skippered boats, treasure hunts that require precise speed control, steering courses between red and green buoys, anchoring tests that evaluate swing circles, and passage‑planning missions using the charting tool.
Each challenge focuses on a different sailing skill—tacking, gybing, sail trim, collision avoidance, anchoring technique or chart navigation—allowing players to practise specific procedures in isolated scenarios.
- During treasure hunts, approach the prize slowly to avoid damaging the cargo.
- In steering challenges, watch nearby AI boats to anticipate unexpected rule‑of‑the‑road behavior.

Boat Handling and Controls
eSail aims for precise and realistic boat handling, covering buoyancy, steering and sail management. Players control mainsheet, jib sheets, kicker, winches, lines and travellers, and can practice winch technique and cleat operation with a virtual crew.
The description highlights that the thought processes and actions required to sail the virtual boat are remarkably close to real‑world handling, reinforcing its educational purpose.
- Start with basic sail adjustments before attempting complex trim.
- Practice winch operation in calm conditions to build confidence before high‑wind scenarios.
