About Dungeon Defenders

Dungeon Defenders mixes tower‑defense strategy with action‑RPG combat as you protect the land of Etheria from an Ancient Evil. Choose one of four distinct classes, build towers, and fight enemies directly while gathering loot and leveling gear.

The game supports up to four players in online or local split‑screen co‑op, and includes a PvP Deathmatch mode. A free development kit lets players create custom missions that can be shared through Steam Workshop.

01 / THE GUIDE

Four Distinct Character Classes

Each class has its own skill tree, tower set, and basic attacks, letting players adopt different combat roles. For example, the Huntress can turn invisible and plant traps, while the Squire blocks choke points and deals heavy melee damage.

Because towers and abilities differ per class, teams can combine complementary strengths. Selecting a mix of stealth‑oriented and frontline classes improves overall defensive coverage against varied enemy types.

  • Pair a stealth class with a melee class to cover hidden and front‑line threats.
  • Test each class’s towers early to discover useful synergies before tackling higher difficulties.

02 / THE GUIDE

4‑Player Online and Local Co‑Op

Up to three friends can join a session, and local split‑screen players can be mixed with online participants. Players may leave or join at any time, keeping the game populated and allowing flexible team sizes.

Co‑op play relies on complementary class strengths, while a separate PvP Deathmatch mode lets teams compete directly instead of defending together.

  • Coordinate class picks before starting a co‑op match to balance offense and defense.
  • Use the ability to join or leave mid‑game to fill empty slots and maintain full team strength.

03 / THE GUIDE

Loot, Level‑Up, and Equipment

Defeated enemies drop money and items that can be stored in the Item Box or the Mana Bank for later upgrades. Experience earned from kills and waves upgrades hit points, attack rate, damage, and other stats on a per‑character basis.

Players can showcase gear in an Adventurer’s Tavern and trade items securely with others online using the built‑in trading system.

  • Prioritize upgrading stats that match your class’s role, such as damage for melee or hit points for tanky builds.
  • Deposit excess money in the Mana Bank to keep your inventory organized for future purchases.

04 / THE GUIDE

Mission Variety and Difficulty Modes

Each level features a unique visual setting, layout, enemy mix, and trap arrangement. Players progress through four difficulty modes, survival missions, and challenge maps to unlock higher‑tier loot.

Some maps require mobile defenses around a moving crystal, while others have you attacking enemy encampments. Large boss monsters appear to test coordinated defenses and strong characters.

  • Start with lower difficulty to learn enemy patterns before attempting survival missions.
  • Adapt tower placement to map‑specific constraints, such as mobile defenses on moving crystals.

05 / THE GUIDE

Dungeon Defenders Development Kit

A free development kit lets players create and edit new missions using all existing game assets. Completed levels can be uploaded to Steam Workshop, providing endless community‑generated content.

Workshop integration encourages sharing and discovering fresh challenges beyond the base game, extending replay value for both solo and co‑op players.

  • Use the kit’s existing assets as a baseline before adding custom elements for smoother level design.
  • Test your custom map in single‑player mode before publishing to ensure balance.
