About Distant Worlds: Universe
Distant Worlds: Universe is a pausable real‑time 4X space strategy game that bundles every previous Distant Worlds release with a new storyline and expanded modding tools. Players command empires across galaxies of up to 1,400 star systems and 50,000 celestial bodies, balancing exploration, colonisation, diplomacy and warfare.
The edition adds private‑enterprise automation, a built‑in galaxy editor, extensive help and tutorials, and a 99‑page modding guide. Whether you prefer a quick skirmish in a crowded sector or an epic sandbox spanning the whole galaxy, the game lets you shape playstyle, victory conditions and gameplay choices.
01 / THE GUIDE
Epic‑Scale Galaxies
Galaxies can contain up to 1,400 star systems and 50,000 planets, moons and asteroids, with nebula clouds shaping star‑cluster distribution. This scale supports both focused battles and sprawling empire‑wide strategies. The map can be customised in the built‑in editor, allowing you to add or remove systems, asteroid fields, space monsters and other objects before starting a new game.
- Compare a densely packed sector to a sparse outer rim to see how nebula placement affects travel routes.
- Use the editor to test a smaller galaxy before committing to a full‑scale campaign.
02 / THE GUIDE
Private Enterprise Automation
Citizens of your empire automatically handle routine tasks such as mining, cargo transport, colony migration and tourism. This reduces micromanagement, letting you focus on macro‑scale decisions like diplomacy and fleet composition. Advisors can also suggest actions in colonisation, defence or diplomacy, providing guidance for newer players while still allowing full control for veterans.
- Observe how automated mining impacts resource flow compared to manual ship assignments.
- Enable advisor suggestions early to learn efficient colonisation routes.

03 / THE GUIDE
Diplomacy and Pirate Interaction
You can negotiate treaties, trade offers or hostile statements with other empires, as well as converse with pirate factions for information or hire them for covert actions. These interactions shape the political landscape and can affect access to resources. Pirates also serve as a source of underground intel, and paying them can provide strategic advantages without direct combat.
- Compare the benefits of a trade agreement versus a piracy contract in the same region.
- Track pirate‑provided intel to anticipate enemy movements.
04 / THE GUIDE
Modding Support and Game Editor
The edition includes a comprehensive 99‑page Modding Guide and a built‑in editor that lets you modify resources, ship components, planetary facilities, alien races and more. You can also create custom events, victory conditions and story triggers. Saved, editor‑customised maps can be reused as the basis for new games, allowing you to replay a hand‑crafted galaxy without regenerating a random one.
- Start by tweaking a single resource to see its ripple effect on colony growth.
- Use custom events to test how a new victory condition changes end‑game pacing.
05 / THE GUIDE
Adjustable Playstyles and Victory Conditions
You may begin with a single planet and sub‑light ships or as an established warp‑capable civilization. Choose between a Standard empire or a Pirate faction, with many adjustable victory conditions and gameplay choices depending on your actions. Victory conditions are adjustable, and the editor also lets you define your own custom objectives.
- Experiment with a pirate start to compare expansion speed against a standard empire.
- Set a custom victory focused on research to evaluate long‑term tech development.
