01 / THE GUIDE
Setting and Narrative
The core setting is a timeless library beyond the river of time, where the Star Key crosses gates on behalf of Yog‑Sothoth. The narrative draws from the Cthulhu Mythos and presents bizarre, thrilling, and intriguing moments without being limited to fear.
Investigators collect clues, roll dice for checks, and choose actions such as bribe, steal, trade, or intimidate. These choices can move the story toward or away from the truth, and each module presents its own ending.
- Observe how different actions shift narrative direction; subtle changes can produce distinct outcomes.
- Compare the tone of each module to gauge the balance between horror and intrigue.

Modules and Content
Four exploration modules, one text module, one rules module, and the large "Cursenday's Black Carnival" have been released, together reaching 450,000 words of game text. Over 50 playable modules are currently available in the Workshop, and regular co‑creation events are held.
Each module has its own ending, and achieving an ending unlocks exclusive collectible content that can be inherited by all investigator characters, expanding the pool of traits, spells, companions, and mythos items.
- Try a mix of exploration and text modules to experience both narrative depth and open‑world freedom.
- Track which endings you have achieved to prioritize unlocking new collectibles.

Gameplay Mechanics
Investigators roll dice for success checks, trigger events, and collect clues throughout each module. Players may resolve encounters through combat, stealth, intimidation, or magic, and the game warns that using forbidden knowledge for spells may bring additional side effects.
The design emphasizes choice; victory does not require combat, and tactics such as bribery or trade can influence story direction, with different actions leading the story in different directions.
- Experiment with non‑combat approaches early to see how the narrative reacts.
- When using magic, note any side effects to inform future decisions.

Creation Mode and Workshop
The main interface includes a creation mode where players can edit and publish original modules. Creators may craft visual‑novel style text modules, rules‑based modules, or open‑world exploration modules, showcasing writing, design, or world‑building skills.
All user‑generated content is shared via Steam Workshop, allowing the community to expand the game’s library continuously and participate in regular co‑creation events.
- Start with a small text module to become familiar with the editor before tackling complex rules.
- Review popular community modules for design inspiration and best‑practice patterns.

Collectibles and Character Traits
Collectible content includes module endings, character traits, spells, companions, and mythos items. Forbidden knowledge lets investigators cast spells, companions join and fight alongside the player, and mythos items provide power‑ups as described in the game text.
When a module ending is achieved, all characters inherit that experience, unlocking exclusive collectible content unique to that ending.
- Note which traits each investigator gains after different module endings to compare their effects.
- Observe how companions appear after specific modules and how they influence subsequent encounters.
