01 / THE GUIDE
Turn‑Based Card Combat
Combat is tactical and turn-based, with each turn's randomly drawn cards that represent attacks, defenses, or utilities. The randomness of the hand forces you to adapt your tactics for each enemy encounter.
Victorious battles award experience for your mercenaries and provide loot from defeated enemies. The card system ensures that even familiar enemy layouts feel fresh with each draw.
- Experiment with different card mixes to discover effective combinations.
- Observe enemy behavior to decide when to prioritize offensive or defensive cards.

Squad Building
You can assemble a team of up to three mercenary characters. Each mercenary can be equipped with gear and upgraded at your home ship, shaping the squad’s strengths and weaknesses.
Experience gained in combat is applied individually, allowing mercenaries to improve their stats over time. This progression lets the squad handle increasingly difficult derelicts as the game advances.
- Mix roles—damage, support, and defense—to cover more situations.
- Consider focusing upgrades on the mercenary that matches your preferred playstyle.

Procedural Derelicts
Every derelict ship or station is generated procedurally, producing new layouts, loot tables, and enemy placements for each expedition. This randomness contributes to the game’s high replay value.
Exploring these structures reveals clues about the fabled alien ship and supplies needed for base upgrades, making each sortie a blend of risk and reward.
- Take note of environmental cues that may hint at hidden loot.
- Plan routes with retreat options in case enemies become overwhelming.

Base Ship Management
Your scavenger’s home ship serves as a hub where mercenaries can heal, level‑up, and have their gear upgraded. Energy for life support can also be recharged here before missions.
From the ship you can recruit new crew members, equip gear, and manage resources gathered from derelicts, directly influencing your effectiveness on future expeditions.
- Heal and recharge life‑support before tackling high‑difficulty derelicts.
- Prioritize gear upgrades that clearly improve mercenary survivability.

Game Modes
Deep Sky Derelicts offers two distinct modes: a story campaign that follows the quest for citizenship, and an arena mode offering additional combat scenarios.
The arena can serve as a place to practice strategies before applying them to narrative missions.
- Use arena runs to experiment with unconventional card decks.
- Treat story missions as opportunities to encounter varied enemy types.
