About DayZ
DayZ is a hardcore, survival‑focused multiplayer sandbox set in post‑apocalyptic wastelands. There are no missions or quests; players write their own story by confronting environmental hazards, infected, and other survivors. The game relies on a minimal, toggleable HUD, requiring players to read cues from the world and their character’s condition.
Two official maps—Chernarus (230 km²) and Livonia (168 km²)—offer distinct terrain and challenges. Up to 60 players share each server, creating unpredictable PvP and cooperative moments. Crafting, base building, and dynamic events such as train crashes add depth to the relentless struggle for survival.

Survival Mechanics
Health, hunger, thirst, temperature and disease are tracked without map markers or mini‑maps. Players must observe visual cues and use the toggleable HUD to monitor these states. Failure to manage any of these factors can lead to death.
Infected attack on sight, while wolves and bears roam forests. Diseases must be diagnosed by observing symptoms and treated with appropriate items. Survival hinges on strategic looting and careful monitoring of the character’s condition.
- Check the HUD frequently for subtle changes in temperature or health.
- Prioritize finding food and water before engaging hostile threats.

Maps
DayZ includes two distinct maps. Chernarus is a hand‑crafted, post‑Soviet landscape spanning 230 km² and is the classic experience. Livonia covers 168 km² with dense forests that appear habitable but hide deeper challenges.
Both maps feature villages, cities, and dynamic points of interest such as train crashes and military convoys. The terrain influences loot scarcity, wildlife presence, and player encounters, shaping each session uniquely.
- Explore the outskirts first to locate safe zones before venturing into towns.
- Use natural landmarks for navigation since no mini‑map is provided.

Player Interaction
Up to 60 players can share a server, creating a spectrum from hostile PvP to cooperative alliances. Voice chat allows players to signal friendliness, but encounters can quickly turn violent, including being tied up or gagged.
Every encounter is unique; players may choose to trade, assist, or eliminate others. The lack of scripted quests means outcomes depend entirely on player decisions and communication.
- Use voice chat to establish intent before approaching unknown players.
- Keep a weapon ready but consider non‑lethal options for potential allies.

Crafting & Base Building
Scavenged items can be combined to repair clothing, craft improvised tools, and build fires for cooking. Players can also construct bases, cultivate farms, hunt, fish, and set traps to protect their space.
Vehicles can be repaired for travel, and high‑tier loot appears at dynamic events like train crashes. Over 50 firearm types with unique magazines and ammo are searchable, expanding combat options.
- Gather basic materials early to enable quick shelter construction.
- Repair a vehicle only after securing enough fuel and spare parts.
