About Curious Expedition
Curious Expedition is a roguelike expedition simulation set in the late 19th century. Players join famous personalities, don pith helmets and khakis, and travel to unmapped regions in search of fame, science, and treasure.
Each playthrough is shaped by procedurally generated worlds, resource and sanity management, native interaction, temple looting, and combat against wildlife, mystical creatures, and dinosaurs.
01 / THE GUIDE
Procedurally Generated Worlds
Every expedition starts in a world built algorithmically, giving each map its own terrain, settlements, and ruins. This guarantees that no two journeys share the exact same layout, requiring fresh navigation each run.
The generated geography influences where resources appear and which encounters arise, so observing the landscape early helps plan routes that match the world’s unique challenges.
- Scan the initial terrain for natural landmarks that hint at resource clusters.
- Compare several runs to notice recurring generation traits.

Resource and Sanity Management
Players must keep supplies such as food, medicine, and equipment stocked while also monitoring a sanity meter. Both physical resources and mental health affect the expedition’s ability to continue.
High sanity and sufficient supplies improve decision‑making during events, whereas low levels can make encounters more difficult, encouraging balanced preparation before setting out.
- Track both material supplies and sanity to avoid unexpected penalties.
- Adjust load‑out based on the expected length of the trek.

Interaction with Natives
Villages and tribal settlements appear across the map, offering chances to trade, gather information, and negotiate passage. These interactions can yield useful items or open new routes.
Communication with local tribes and civilizations is a core part of these encounters alongside trading.
- Compare trade proposals from different settlements before committing.
- Note any dialogue cues that hint at hidden opportunities.

Looting Temples and Managing Curses
Mysterious temple ruins contain artifacts that increase fame and provide treasure, but they are guarded by deadly traps. Successful looting rewards explorers with powerful items.
Some relics carry curses that produce unforeseen side effects, potentially altering the trek or surrounding environment, so handling them requires caution.
- Look for visual trap indicators before entering a ruin.
- Record any curse effects to compare their impact across expeditions.
05 / THE GUIDE
Combat with Wildlife and Mystical Creatures
Expeditions may encounter hostile wildlife, dinosaurs, and other mystical beings. Combat relies on preparation, appropriate weapons, and positioning to survive these threats.
Defeating foes can protect the party, while reckless fighting may quickly reduce health and other supplies.
- Identify enemy type before committing to a fight.
- Balance offensive gear with defensive supplies.
