About Colony Ship: A Post-Earth Role Playing Game
Colony Ship is an isometric, party‑based role‑playing game set in the year 2754 aboard the Starfarer, a retrofitted interplanetary freighter that has become a generation ship. The vessel has been in service for more than two decades before being repurposed for a centuries‑long voyage to an unknown destination, and no living passenger will ever see Earth or the target star system. After a violent mutiny toppled the original Ship Authority, a patchwork of factions now competes for control of the decaying vessel. Players awaken in the Pit, a sprawling cargo‑hold settlement, and must navigate a world of scarce resources, political intrigue, and hostile encounters. The game offers a reputation‑driven faction system, a combat model built around three core factors—Accuracy, Evasion, and Damage—and a tile‑based stealth mode that visualises detection risk with colour‑coded tiles. Up to four characters can be active at any time, drawn from a pool of ten recruitable party members, while the ship is populated by hundreds of additional inhabitants whose attitudes shift based on the player’s deeds. Speech skills such as Persuasion, Streetwise, and Impersonate provide non‑violent alternatives to combat, and every choice is recorded to affect future dialogue, mission availability, and faction standing. The combination of political maneuvering, tactical combat, and careful stealth encourages players to balance aggression with negotiation and to plan ahead for the long‑term survival of their crew on the endless metal corridor of the Starfarer.
01 / THE GUIDE
Generation Ship Setting
The Starfarer is an old interplanetary freighter that had already served twenty years before being rechristened for its generational mission. No living passenger will ever see Earth or Proxima Centauri, and the ship’s ultimate destination remains uncertain. Key locations—including the Pit, Armory, Mission Control, Shuttle Bay, and Factory—are described as abandoned, looted, or heavily fortified, reflecting the long‑term decline after the mutiny and providing the backdrop for quests and resource gathering.
- Map the major locations early to avoid unnecessary backtracking.
- Take note of each area’s description; it often hints at usable items or hidden routes.

Faction Dynamics
After the original government collapsed, multiple factions compete for dominance within the ship. Player choices determine who becomes friend or foe, and reputation with each group influences future dialogue and mission outcomes. The Pit functions as a free‑city where various factions intersect, offering opportunities to align with or oppose them.
- Use Persuasion, Streetwise, or Impersonate when available to improve relations without fighting.
- Watch how reputation numbers change after each encounter to gauge faction attitudes.

Combat Mechanics
Combat difficulty is governed by three core factors: Accuracy, Evasion, and Damage. Accuracy reflects the chance to hit, Evasion the chance to avoid being hit, and Damage the amount dealt or received once a hit lands. The description notes that players will often be outnumbered and outgunned, encouraging strategies that boost these factors or avoid combat altogether when possible.
- Balance gear and skill choices to improve both Accuracy and Evasion without over‑investing in a single area.
- Consider retreat or alternative solutions when enemy numbers vastly exceed yours.

Stealth System
When entering stealth mode, each tile receives a detection value based on guard distance, facing direction, their Perception, and any thermal vision gear they wear. Green tiles are safe, yellow risky, and red guarantee discovery. Noise generated by steps and actions such as lockpicking, climbing, or using computers accumulates in an alert bar; higher guard Perception fills the bar faster, and an alerted guard turns toward the last noise source, potentially turning safe tiles red.
- Move slowly and limit noisy actions to keep the alert bar low.
- Invest in sneaking‑related skills or gear to expand green‑tile coverage.

Party Management
The game supports a maximum party size of four active characters drawn from ten recruitable members, while the ship is populated by a much larger crowd of inhabitants. Each recruitable character brings distinct skills, backstory, and reputation, influencing dialogue options and combat roles. Reputation, deeds, and choices are tracked throughout the ship, affecting consequences and the availability of certain quests or allies.
- Mix characters with strong combat abilities and those with high speech skills for flexibility.
- Monitor each member’s standing with factions to avoid unexpected betrayals.
