About Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword
Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword expands the award‑winning 2005 strategy title with a focus on the gunpowder era and later periods. The expansion adds new civilizations, leaders, wonders, units, and late‑game systems such as corporations, espionage, and an expanded space race.
It also introduces eleven scenarios, an Advanced Start option that lets players begin later in the timeline, and a smarter AI that relies more on strategic play than on handicap bonuses.
01 / THE GUIDE
New Civilizations and Leaders
Beyond the Sword adds ten new civilizations, including Portugal, Babylonia, and the Netherlands, each with its own unique units and buildings. Sixteen additional leaders, such as Hammurabi and Abraham Lincoln, join the roster, providing more cultural and strategic variety.
These additions integrate directly into the core game mechanics, allowing players to pursue any victory condition while using the distinct traits, units, and buildings associated with each new civilization and leader.
- Review each new civilization’s unique unit early to see how it fits your intended victory path.
- Match a leader’s historical focus with the diplomatic or military strategies you prefer.
02 / THE GUIDE
Corporations System
Corporations function like a second religion, letting players found companies that spread across the map. Each corporation provides specific benefits but requires particular resources to operate, adding an economic layer to empire management.
Strategic placement of corporations can boost production, trade, or other bonuses, while competition for the required resources creates new diplomatic and territorial considerations.
- Identify regions rich in the resources a corporation needs before founding it.
- Balance the corporation’s benefits against the cost of maintaining its required resources.

03 / THE GUIDE
Early Espionage
Espionage becomes available earlier than in the base game, offering tools to spy on rivals, stir citizen unrest, and defend government secrets. These actions can influence diplomatic relations and military outcomes.
The expanded espionage options give players indirect ways to weaken opponents without direct conflict, adding depth to strategic planning.
- Use espionage to disrupt enemy production before launching a war.
- Invest in counter‑espionage to protect your own cities from sabotage.

Advanced Starts
Advanced Starts let players purchase components of a custom empire and begin later in the timeline. This shortens the early game while still exposing players to the expansion’s late‑game features.
The option satisfies fans who want to jump directly into complex systems such as corporations, espionage, and the expanded space victory.
- Allocate start points toward technologies that unlock late‑game content.
- Choose a starting location with diverse resources for flexible growth.
05 / THE GUIDE
Expanded Epic Game Content
The epic game receives a massive increase of new units, buildings, and technologies, especially targeting the late game. This broadens strategic options for players aiming for domination, cultural supremacy, or other victory types.
The added content works alongside the new scenarios, wonders, and AI improvements to keep the endgame engaging and varied.
- Research new technologies that unlock powerful late‑game units early.
- Integrate new wonders into your strategy to gain unique bonuses.
