About Chime
Chime is a single‑player puzzle title from Zoë Mode created for the OneBigGame charity initiative. Players rotate and place shapes to complete solid quads, racing against a timer while the music evolves. The game features six distinct levels, each with its own soundtrack and shape set, plus a free‑play mode that lets you choose difficulty or play without time pressure. Sales royalties continue to support charitable partners, and the title includes Steam achievements, leaderboards, and partial controller support.
01 / THE GUIDE
Puzzle Mechanics
Shapes are rotated and placed onto a grid. The goal is to create solid four‑block squares, called quads, before the timer expires. Completing quads fills the grid and contributes to the score.
When the grid reaches 100 % filled, it automatically resets, allowing the player to continue the session and attempt higher scores.
- Observe how quickly the grid fills to gauge the optimal rotation speed.
- Try to anticipate where future blocks will land to keep quads forming efficiently.

Music Integration
Each level’s soundtrack reacts to player actions. Filling the grid alters the track loop, and placing blocks can trigger individual notes. Completing quads also launches song samples, remixing the music in real time.
The soundtrack includes contributions from artists such as Moby and Paul Hartnoll (Orbital), providing a varied audio experience across levels.
- Listen for musical cues that indicate a quad has been completed.
- Experiment with different block placements to hear how the track evolves.

Level Structure
Chime offers six unique levels, each defined by its own music, grid layout, and set of shapes. The sixth level, titled “Still Alive,” draws inspiration from the Portal series.
Each level stands on its own, defined by its own music, grid, and shape sets.
- Start with the earlier levels to become familiar with each shape set.
- Notice how the grid size and shape variety change between levels.

Free‑Play Mode
In free‑play, players can select one of three difficulty settings or opt for a mode without any time limit. This allows focus on music creation rather than score pressure.
The mode uses the same block‑placement mechanics but removes the countdown, letting players experiment with remixing tracks at their own pace.
- Use the no‑time‑pressure option to explore how different block patterns affect the music.
- Switch between difficulty levels to see how each setting changes your remixing.

Achievements & Leaderboards
Chime integrates Steam achievements and leaderboards, tracking high scores and specific in‑game milestones. Players can compare their performance with others worldwide.
Stats are recorded for each play session, and the game supports Steam Family Sharing.
- Review your stats after each session to identify which levels yield the highest scores.
- Compete on leaderboards by aiming for 100 % grid fills quickly.
