About Cairn
Cairn is a realistic climbing simulation that follows pro climber Aava on the first ascent of Mount Kami. The game lets you locate holds, place hands and feet, and adjust posture, effort and balance with simple controls, while a misstep can send you falling.
Developed by The Game Bakers, the Windows‑only title includes full controller support, adjustable difficulty, resource management for pitons, chalk, food, water and medicine, and features such as Save Anytime, Steam Cloud and subtitle options.

Realistic Climbing Mechanics
Cairn’s climbing system requires you to find the best holds and place your hands and feet using straightforward inputs. Your posture, effort and balance directly affect each move, and an incorrect placement results in a fall, reinforcing careful decision‑making.
Each wall is presented as a demanding challenge that can be tuned through the Adjustable Difficulty option. This lets players of different skill levels experience the same climb while keeping the core mechanic of precise hold selection intact.
- Begin on a lower difficulty to become comfortable with hold placement before tackling tougher sections.
- Observe how your posture changes affect movement to improve stability on difficult walls.

Open Route Planning
The game allows you to climb anywhere on Mount Kami after scouting the rock face from the ground. Planning a route before you start is essential, as you must solve problems on the wall to navigate difficult sections.
Because any surface can be climbed, exploration and strategic thinking are encouraged. Choosing a path that matches your available gear can reduce the need for extra resources later in the ascent.
- Survey the entire face before committing to a line; early scouting saves time and effort.
- Consider alternate routes that may provide easier holds or better opportunities for gear placement.

Survival and Resource Management
Beyond climbing, Cairn requires you to manage pitons, chalk, finger tape, as well as food, water and medicine. Setting up bivouacs and exploring the mountain helps you gather these necessities for the long ascent.
Effective handling of these resources is crucial; shortages can halt progress or force a retreat, making the balance between climbing effort and survival planning a central part of the experience.
- Gather food and water early to avoid scarcity during later stages of the climb.
- Place bivouacs in sheltered locations to minimise the need for additional medicine.

Narrative Exploration
As Aava, you meet unexpected companions and hear stories from those left on the ground, learning the history of Mount Kami. These encounters let you decide what Aava is willing to sacrifice for her dream.
The narrative unfolds through dialogue and environmental cues, providing personal context without altering the core climbing or survival mechanics.
- Listen to each companion’s story; they may hint at useful resources or safer routes.
- Reflect on Aava’s choices after dialogue to deepen immersion, even though they do not change gameplay.

Platform Features and Accessibility
Cairn runs on Windows and offers full controller support, including DualShock and DualSense compatibility. While a gamepad is recommended, the game can be played without it, and features like Save Anytime and Steam Cloud aid convenience.
Additional options such as Adjustable Difficulty, subtitle support, stereo and surround sound, and the ability to play without timed input make the title accessible to a wide range of players.
- Enable subtitles if dialogue becomes hard to follow during intense climbing moments.
- Use Save Anytime before attempting a risky section to protect your progress.
