About Bugtopia

Bugtopia is a Windows‑only idle game from the three‑person Chinese studio Nocturnal Games. Players raise, breed, and collect more than 300 insect species that are based on real‑world counterparts and given an artistic makeover.

The title adds a DIY terrarium system with dozens of terrain, water, soil and wallpaper options, plus five time periods and four weather conditions. Optional desktop wallpaper mode and a pomodoro timer let the terrarium stay visible while you work.

01 / THE GUIDE

Bug Collection

The game offers over 300 distinct insect species, each linked to an encyclopedia entry that records its real‑world inspiration. This lets players view factual information while they fill their terrarium.

Every species receives its own artistic style, preserving the natural charm while giving a unique visual look. The encyclopedia expands as new bugs appear, providing a reference for identification.

  • Check the encyclopedia before trying to acquire a new bug to avoid duplicates.
  • Sort your collection by habitat type to see which groups are missing.

02 / THE GUIDE

Breeding System

A breeding box lets you place two bugs together and then wait. After the waiting period the system may produce a new, sometimes rare, species.

Each pairing can yield a surprise outcome. This encourages players to experiment with different combinations.

  • Write down each pair you try so you can track which combinations generate new bugs.
  • Mix bugs with contrasting colors to increase visual variety in offspring.

Terrarium Customization

Bugtopia provides a DIY landscaping system with more than 20 terrarium types, over 70 water, soil and wallpaper options, and 300+ decorative items. These items unlock gradually through idle gameplay.

The system includes 700+ evolving states that change as you add items, allowing many aesthetic combinations.

  • Combine different soil textures to create layered ground effects.
  • Choose wallpaper themes that match the mood of your bug collection.

04 / THE GUIDE

Dynamic Environment

Terrariums cycle through five time periods—from dawn to night—and four weather conditions, such as sunny, drizzle, and mist. The cycles run automatically.

These cycles add visual ambience, with lighting and atmospheric effects changing the terrarium's mood.

  • Observe how different lighting highlights bug colors at each time period.
  • Switch weather to complement the theme of a particular terrarium.

05 / THE GUIDE

Utility Features

Bugtopia includes a desktop wallpaper mode that places a live terrarium on your screen, letting you watch bugs while you work.

A built‑in pomodoro timer offers a work‑break cycle that runs alongside the main idle experience.

  • Enable wallpaper mode during short breaks for a quick visual reset.
  • Use the pomodoro timer to schedule regular checks on your terrarium.
