About Before We Leave
Before We Leave is a casual city‑building simulation where you guide the newly emerged Peeps from underground life toward a thriving civilization across a solar system. You construct shelters, manage resources, and research ancient technologies while keeping pollution and happiness in balance.
The game features six distinct biomes on hexagonal islands, and you can trade goods between settlements by sea and by space. Ancient guardians present challenges, but there is no combat or rival colonies, allowing expansion at your own pace.
01 / THE GUIDE
Building Settlements
The first task is to place basic shelters for the Peeps, who have only known life underground. These structures provide immediate shelter and allow the community to emerge into sunlight, establishing a foothold for later development.
As you expand, you can found new settlements on additional continents and planets. Each new settlement adds to the growing fabric of your civilization, letting you spread population and production across the hexagonal lands.
- Position early shelters near visible resource clusters to reduce transport distance.
- Group related buildings to keep future upgrades straightforward.

Researching Ancient Technologies
Scattered across the world are forgotten technologies that you can uncover and study. Research unlocks new building options and efficiencies, giving you tools to avoid the mistakes of your ancestors.
Some technologies also provide solutions to obstacles presented by ancient guardians, allowing you to keep settlements safe without engaging in combat.
- Prioritize research that improves resource handling early on.
- Compare the benefits of different technologies before allocating resources.

03 / THE GUIDE
Managing Resources, Pollution, and Happiness
Food, building materials, and energy must be gathered and allocated wisely. Over‑extraction raises pollution, which the game tracks as a factor you need to monitor.
The game asks you to manage resources, pollution and happiness together as your settlements grow. Balancing these elements supports steady expansion, while ancient guardians still demand attention and challenge your settlements.
- Keep an eye on pollution as one of the factors you are asked to manage.
- Consider the wellbeing of your Peeps alongside resource use before expanding further.

Trading Between Settlements
Goods can be moved by sea routes or by space lanes, linking distant islands and planets. Trade helps balance shortages and spreads prosperity across your network.
Well‑planned routes let you specialize certain settlements while relying on others for needed supplies, reducing the need to duplicate every production facility.
- Begin with sea routes to connect nearby islands before adding space lanes.
- Link high‑output settlements with those lacking specific resources.

Exploring Six Unique Biomes
Each hexagonal island belongs to one of six biomes, offering distinct terrain shapes and resource profiles. Each biome offers distinct terrain and resources to weigh when planning where to build.
Exploration also reveals ancient guardians that protect the galaxy. Understanding each biome’s challenges lets you design strategies that keep settlements safe without combat.
- Scout each biome before committing large construction projects.
- Adapt building styles to match the local resource abundance.
