About Battle Brothers
Battle Brothers drops you into a fractured world where old empires have crumbled and danger lurks everywhere. As the commander of a mercenary company you travel a procedurally generated map, taking contracts, recruiting fighters and equipping them for gritty, turn‑based battles. The game blends tactical combat with sandbox management: you decide which foes to face, how to feed and pay your brothers, and whether to chase loot, trade routes or political intrigue. Every choice reshapes reputation, wealth and the ever‑changing political landscape.
01 / THE GUIDE
Turn‑Based Tactical Battles
Combat unfolds on grid‑based battlefields where terrain, height and obstacles matter. Each brother has action points, initiative and fatigue that influence how many attacks they can execute in a turn.
Weapons interact with enemy types—spears struggle against skeletons while maces excel, and fatigue can limit heavy attacks. Morale also shifts; low resolve may cause troops to flee, while momentum swinging in your favour can trigger a rout of the enemy.
- Observe enemy armor before committing heavy weapons; a lighter weapon may preserve valuable loot.
- Position high‑ground units early to gain a defensive advantage.

Real‑Time World Exploration
The map is explored in real time, letting you move between bustling cities, wandering beasts and points of interest at your own pace. Settlements offer taverns for rumors, markets for gear and lords for contracts.
Exploration is open‑ended: you may linger to trade, hunt crypts for loot, or press onward to the next stronghold, shaping the narrative through the places you choose to visit.
- Visit multiple towns before accepting a contract to compare reward offers.
- Note terrain features like height and obstacles that could give you an edge in upcoming fights.

Fatigue and Morale Management
Fatigue accumulates with each attack, especially powerful ones, and reduces the actions a brother can take. Heavy armor and strenuous moves increase fatigue faster, limiting later turns.
Morale reflects a brother’s resolve; low morale can cause retreats, while momentum in your favour can lead to enemy routs. Both systems require careful pacing of engagements.
- Rotate heavily fatigued brothers out of the front line to recover before the next encounter.
- Maintain high morale by securing quick victories early in a battle.

Brother Backgrounds and Traits
Each recruit arrives with a background—Retired Soldier, Beggar, Graverobber, etc.—that sets starting gear, attributes and likely traits. Backgrounds also trigger unique events and influence how other characters react to your company.
Physical and mental traits develop over time, shaping roles such as slower‑tiring athletic warriors or death‑wish warriors. The perk tree lets you tailor each brother’s growth to match your tactical plans.
- Match a brother’s background to the role you need; a Crusader may start with better armor for frontline duty.
- Watch for traits like Deathwish that can bolster group morale in tough fights.

Contracts and Their Consequences
Settlements and Noble Houses generate dynamic contracts of varying difficulty and payout. Accepting a high‑risk contract can bring greater wealth but also threatens your starting sellswords.
Every contract influences your reputation with factions, alters renown, and may trigger future events. Failure or harsh methods can sour relationships, while successful, honorable completions improve standing.
- Balance risk by mixing easy bandit contracts with occasional tougher monster hunts.
- Consider the political climate before taking a contract that may anger a powerful faction.
