About Acceptable Losses
Acceptable Losses puts you in command of a World War‑I front‑line unit. You are the officer who issues patrols, orders trench repairs, and plans assaults while paperwork and intelligence flood your desk. Each day you balance headquarters’ demands against the lives of your squads, trying to survive twenty days of relentless pressure.
The game offers over sixty missions with multiple outcomes, random events, and a permanent death system. Successful performance can earn you the chance to go Over the Top, leading an assault and then holding captured trenches until reinforcements arrive.
01 / THE GUIDE
Mission Structure
Every mission in Acceptable Losses includes at least six possible outcomes, shaping how each operation unfolds. Mid‑mission events—more than one hundred in total—can shift those outcomes in real time, adding unpredictability to each decision. Nighttime introduces a separate set of events that affect squads, supplies, and trench conditions, influencing the next day's options and challenges.
- Observe how mid‑mission events alter outcomes before committing to a plan.
- Consider the impact of night events on supplies when scheduling daytime actions.

Soldier Management
The game generates soldiers with unique names and birthplaces, giving each squad a distinct identity. When a soldier dies, the loss is permanent, affecting future mission composition and morale. You can join missions personally for a leadership boost, but doing so carries the risk of injury to your own character.
- Track individual soldier backgrounds to anticipate morale effects.
- Weigh the leadership boost against the potential injury risk before joining a mission.

HQ Evaluations
After each day, headquarters evaluates your performance, determining your standing and whether you earn the chance to go Over the Top. Poor results can lead to conditions being taken back, while strong performance tilts conditions in your favor. These evaluations are the primary way the game measures progress and unlocks the final assault scenario.
- Aim for consistent positive outcomes to improve HQ standing.
- Monitor evaluation feedback to adjust future mission choices.

Night Events
Nighttime brings over thirty distinct events that can affect squads, supply levels, and trench conditions. These events can alter the strategic landscape for the following day. Understanding common night event patterns helps you prepare resources and adjust morale before daylight operations begin.
- Prepare extra supplies if night events frequently affect logistics.
- Use night event trends to anticipate morale shifts.

Modifiers and Conditions
Over fifteen modifiers—such as morale, fatigue, weather, and enemy readiness—shape conditions. These variables interact with outcomes, making each decision carry weight. Keeping these conditions in mind helps you gauge risk and adapt tactics accordingly.
- Check modifier levels before committing to high‑risk actions.
- Balance fatigue and morale to maintain squad effectiveness.
