About A Total War Saga: THRONES OF BRITANNIA
Set in 878 AD, A Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia places you amid the fragile peace after Alfred the Great’s defence at Edington. Ten factions—from Anglo‑Saxon kingdoms to Gaelic clans and Viking warlords—vie for dominance across a detailed map of the British Isles.
The Grand Campaign offers multiple routes to victory: aggressive territorial expansion, renown earned through construction and technology, or completion of faction‑specific objectives that culminate in an Ultimate condition. Players must manage settlements, raise armies and react to historic dilemmas that shape Britain’s future.
01 / THE GUIDE
Grand Campaign Paths
The Grand Campaign presents three distinct victory routes. One rewards aggressive expansion of territory through force of arms, another grants renown by constructing buildings and advancing technology, and a third follows unique objectives tied to each faction’s history.
All routes require control of settlements, recruitment of forces and response to events that appear on the map from the Scottish Highlands to Kent’s orchards, gradually revealing new regions as fog‑of‑war recedes.
- Identify which route aligns with your faction’s strengths early in the campaign.
- Balance territorial growth with the need to address emerging dilemmas.

Playable Factions and Leaders
Ten factions from five cultures are available, each led by a historic figure such as King Alfred (West Seaxe) or Guthrum (East Engle). The factions include Anglo‑Saxons, Gaels, Welsh, Viking Sea Kings and the Great Viking Army.
Leaders determine the capital city—Winchester for West Seaxe, York for Northymbre, etc.—and trigger faction‑specific events and dilemmas that influence diplomatic and military decisions throughout the campaign.
- Review each leader’s background to anticipate the type of dilemmas they may encounter.
- Use the capital’s location to plan early expansion routes.

Capturable Minor Settlements
Beyond major cities, the game introduces capturable minor settlements that extend your economic reach. Securing these locations lets you influence enemy trade routes and draw foes out of fortified positions.
Minor settlements form a strategic layer distinct from larger towns; their capture can shift regional power without requiring a full‑scale siege of a major city.
- Target minor settlements that sit on enemy trade routes to disrupt their income.
- Consider the geographic spread of minor towns to maintain a cohesive front.

Historical Events and Dilemmas
Each faction encounters a series of unique events based on authentic history, such as Viking expeditions or Anglo‑Saxon peasant management. Choices made in these dilemmas shape the faction’s narrative and can affect diplomatic standing.
Branching dilemmas often present moral or strategic decisions, influencing future objectives and the overall flow of the campaign.
- Weigh long‑term consequences when selecting dilemma outcomes.
- Monitor how events alter relations with neighboring factions.
